Rehoboth Beach Recap

So as promised, here’s a quick recap of my Rehoboth Beach vacation…

The beaches were good… crowded and rocky and cold, but enjoyable once you found some good spots…

Beach

The food was fantastic, here’s a picture of some hot fat crabs (Maryland Blue Claw Crabs)

Hot Fat Crabs

Dewey Beach was quite the crazy party town… if you guys hit up the Delaware beaches, Dewey beach is where it’s at!

Other than that, golf, relaxation, good food, and sun pretty much summed up my entire vacation…

  • Hubcap, Luigi, Son of Marv, and Wobbles…

So as you saw in the last post… I took residence in NYC for one night…

The skinny? I saw Wall St., WTC site, and Times Square…

Then met up with my boy blameMike and we had some dinner (read: REAL ramen) at:

Sapporo

Then hit up the night and drank our asses off… yeah it was nuts.

Halo 3 E3 2007 Trailer

Download the music here… by who else but Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori

Funny side note: The original Halo 3 Trailer, seen here, featured “Finish the Fight” by Martin and Michael was downloadable via iTunes and NOT the Zune Marketplace… funny… That trailer gave me goosebumps… and the documentary on XBLM was sweet!

New Host!

Posted by Jake Good
on Jul 11, 07

So if you’ve noticed lately… my blog has been up and down the last few days. Well… I’ve finally done it.

I’ve left the cramped servers of DreamHost and moved onto greener ground…

I’ve been contemplating the move for a few weeks as my hosting contract was up and I needed to decide what to do. My requirements for a new host were pretty simple. Be cheap, be fast, give me some good stuff, and let me host Rails applications.

To my suprise, I found a VPS solution that was actually cheap! SliceHost… came recommended from TopFunky. I now have my own slice in the virtual computing sky!

What slice did I buy? 256 Slice.

  • 256 MB of RAM

  • 10 GB HD Space

  • 100 GB Transfer

All for $20 a month… not bad at all!

My current blog setup is as follows: Apache 2.2.4 + modproxy + all of the goodies (gzip compression, etc.) + Mongrel (mongrelcluster)… and if you notice, it’s going a hell-uv-a lot faster!

So now you might ask… what about my other domains and email on Dreamhost… what did you do? Well… I moved my email addresses (jake@whoisjake.com and jake@developstuff.com) over to Google Apps following Scott’s wonderful article. It’s sweet… I basically get 2GB of email using Gmail interface for my domains… and I still control the DNS to my domains to do what I want with the websites! NICE! All for FREE!

Wow… That’s quite a mouthful… but yeah, thanks for the patience and hopefully I’ll get back to writing more!

p.s. If you sign up for hosting from Slicehost… tell them that Jake sent you (enter in jake@developstuff.com as a referreal)

XM Radio Review

Posted by Jake Good
on Jul 09, 07

I’ve been playing with XM Radio since I bought my new car in March and have been pleased… Why did I get it? I listen to my iPod at work a lot… and when I’m riding in the car, I want to listen to something different that’s not on my iPod… and the radio is full of crappy ads. Ick!

There are several channels that peak my interest: The Heat, The City, BPM… etc. and I particularly like the clarity of the sound that comes down through the satellites.

I think another interesting aspect of XM is that they broadcast online as well… with XM Radio ONLINE I can tune into any of the same channels that I enjoy in my car.

The best part about online is that you can see what songs are playing on all of the channels through AJAXy goodness… So now I can pick and choose which channels to listen to just by what song is playing…

Here’s a screenie of the online tool:

http://player.xmradio.com - XM Radio Online - The Player

Here’s the review…

Pros:

  • Clear sound… no buffering or any static at all.

  • Works anywhere I go… except when my car is in my garage ;)

  • I can listen online at work for free with my subscription.

Cons:

  • Doesn’t work in my garage, but who cares.

  • Lots of song overlap in the Hip-Hop / Urban section.

  • It costs money. $12.95 a month (I got a free 3 month trial + 1 free month cause I paid for a year in advance).
